Frequently asked questions

Insurance and billing

What does ‘out of network’ mean for me?

You still have benefits here — you just have more flexibility in choosing your provider. If preferred, we can always submit a pre-authorization for you so you have an idea of your out-of-pocket cost

Will I still be able to use my insurance here?

Our team files claims on your behalf, so you don’t have to deal with the paperwork. Even though we’re not in-network, most PPOs will still cover a large percentage of preventive services such as exams, cleanings, and X-rays.

How much more will it cost me?

Before any treatment, we provide a detailed cost estimate so there are no surprises. Many patients find the difference is smaller than expected — especially for preventive or minor procedures.

Why is this practice out of network?

Our goal is to provide the best possible care without being restricted by insurance company limitations. Many insurance networks set fee caps that can compromise quality, time, and materials. By staying independent, we can: use the best technology and labs; spend more time with you; and, personalize your care plan.

Will my insurance benefits still apply in the same way?

PPO benefits still apply — but coverage levels can vary. Our team will review your plan details with you so you understand exactly what’s covered before treatment begins.

Can you help me with my claim or reimbursement?

You won’t need to fill out or mail anything yourself — we take care of that for you.

Appointment policies and cancellations

How do I make an appointment?

You can call our office or request an appointment online. We’ll work with you to find a convenient time. We also do our best to accommodate same-day or emergency visits when possible—please let us know your needs when you call so we can prioritize accordingly.

What about same-day treatment or emergencies?

Yes — when scheduling allows, we’ll do our best to provide same-day treatment or see you for urgent dental needs. Because these slots are limited, advance notice helps us better accommodate you, but if you have an emergency, call us and we will work to fit you in.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We ask that you give us as much notice as possible. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our office at least 24 hours in advance. This helps us offer the time slot to another patient in need and keeps our schedule flowing smoothly.

What if I cancel less than 24 hours before my appointment (or don’t show)?

Because time has been reserved just for you, and others may be waiting, we charge a cancellation fee if notice is less than 24 hours or if you miss your appointment without contacting us. The fee is $40 and cannot be billed to insurance; it is your direct responsibility.

Why do you charge a cancellation fee?

When an appointment is scheduled, we prepare staff, treatment space and time specifically for you. Late cancellations or no-shows reduce our ability to serve other patients and impact our schedule. This fee is a way to encourage reliable scheduling and fairness to all our patients.

What if it’s a genuine emergency or something unexpected happens?

We understand that emergencies and unexpected situations arise. If you have a true emergency or unavoidable conflict, we ask you to let us know as soon as possible. We may waive the fee on a case-by-case basis under those circumstances.

Post-treatment care

After Local Anesthesia

– Your lips, tongue, and cheeks may feel numb for 1–3 hours
– Avoid eating or drinking hot liquids until full feeling returns to prevent accidentally biting or burning yourself.
– Young patients or those easily distracted should be monitored to prevent biting the numb area.

Tip: Once the numbness wears off, start with soft foods until you feel comfortable chewing normally.

After Tooth Extraction

The first 24 hours are most important for healing.
– Bite firmly on the gauze for 30–45 minutes to help form a clot. Replace gauze if bleeding continues (use gentle pressure).
– Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw for 24 hours — this can dislodge the clot and cause a “dry socket.”
– Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 48–72 hours.
– Apply an ice pack (15 min on / 15 min off) on the outside of your face for the first 6–8 hours to reduce swelling.
– Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
– Eat soft foods (soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies — no seeds or nuts) for the first day or two.
– Resume gentle rinsing with warm salt water after 24 hours (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) 2–3 times per day.

Call us if you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, fever, or swelling that worsens after 2–3 days.

After Root Canal Treatment

– Mild tenderness for a few days is normal.
– Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your final restoration (filling or crown) is placed.
– Take medications as prescribed to reduce discomfort or infection risk.
– Brush and floss gently around the area unless advised otherwise.
– If you notice swelling, pain that worsens, or a cracked temporary filling, please contact us.

Important: Schedule your follow-up appointment promptly — the treated tooth needs a permanent crown or filling to prevent fracture or re-infection.

After Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

– Mild soreness, tooth sensitivity, or gum tenderness is normal for 1–2 days.
– Brush and floss gently, but continue your home care routine — clean teeth heal faster.
– Rinse twice daily with warm salt water (or any medicated rinse prescribed by your dentist).
– Avoid crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods for 24 hours.
– If anesthetic was used, follow the local anesthesia precautions above.
– Sensitivity to cold may last a few days — desensitizing toothpaste can help.

Important: Regular flossing and cleanings every 3–4 months help maintain your gum health and prevent re-infection.

Call Our Office If You Notice

– Persistent or severe pain
– Swelling that increases after 2–3 days
– Prolonged bleeding
– Fever or chills
– Bad taste or drainage from the area
